Jewelry Basics

When you buy jewels, it helps if you have knowledge of commonly used terms and materials used in jewelry. Some of them are listed.

Amber – A yellowish brown translucent fossilized conifer tree resin. It may also come in other colors such as red, white, black and blue.

Amethyst- A mineral quartz gemstone. It ranges in color from lavender, deep purple to green. Deep colored stones are more valued.

Citrine- A yellow semi precious stone that ranges in color from pale yellow to golden brown.

Cubic Zirconia- A synthetically produced gemstone that resembles a diamond. It is inexpensive yet classy. Comes in many colors. Choose your jewels from amazing cubic zirconia jewelry at EvesAddiction.com - cubic zirconia rings, cubic zirconia earrings, cubic zirconia necklaces, cubic zirconia pendants and cubic zirconia bracelets.

Diamond- Lustrous highly priced gemstone. The most common are the colorless diamonds, but diamonds also come in yellow, orange, brown and almost black colors. The rarer colors include red, blue, green, and purple. A diamond's value is based on the ‘4

C's’- color, cut, clarity, and carat weight.

Emerald- Green colored precious stone. They come as six-sided crystals.

Gold- A precious yellow colored metal that is mixed with other metals, usually silver and copper, to make it harder. The purity of jewels made of this metal is measured in karats, 24 K being the purest.

Karat- The unit of measurement of gold content in a piece of jewelry. It ranges from 1 to 24 and the higher the Karat, the greater its gold content. This term is not the same as Carat, which is a measure of the weight of diamonds and other gemstones.

Pearl- Gems grown in oysters and other mollusks. In nature, pearls are formed when a foreign object (like a tiny particle of sand) enters their shell. The mollusk secretes a lustrous substance that coats the object. Pearl prices vary based on the size and symmetry. A perfect round natural pearl is expensive and jewels made of artificially cultured pearls cost relatively less.

Platinum- A white colored precious metal, heavier than gold. It is mixed with another metal to strengthen it. Holds gem stones well.

Polish- The process used to make metal or stone smooth and glossy. Polishing helps eliminate flaws and increases shine.

Ruby- A gemstone, commonly pink or red in color, but may also be purple or brown colored.

Silver- A white metal, usually mixed with other metals. Silver tarnishes on being exposed to air.
